Memory 26
Negative Neutral: funeral
Won: Day 144
Game: cake battleship
Summary
The week after the house fire that killed Tom's mother is kind of a blur to him, mostly. He ended up mostly staying over with his uncle while his dad was busy making arrangements. His uncle was nice to stay with, and even tried distracting him by showing him how to play Dragon's Helm, an RPG where you play as a knight on a quest to find legendary equipment to save the world. A fun game, though it did little to help.
The wake sticks out. He was told to wear a particularly uncomfortable formal suit for the occasion, one his dad had rented, but he tried to be good and not complain too much when it was explained that literally everyone was going to be formal for this.
His mother looked peaceful in her coffin, surrounded in scarlet flowers, looking like she was just sleeping. You wouldn't even know she'd died in a fire. In fact, he overheard the funeral home people commenting about how surprising that was - they'd only had to fix things where she'd been crushed, she'd needed no makeup to hide burns or anything.
He doesn't remember most of the people who showed up, mostly distant family who he rarely sees anyway. His maternal grandmother was there, sobbing over having outlived both her husband and her only child. Her cousins, few as there were, came, but he doesn't remember them well, and they kind of stuck to themselves anyway. Some of his dad's family came too - Tom's grandparents, the same uncle who he'd been staying with, his aunt who lives close enough.
...Okay, there were two people who stood out. A red-haired man and a woman with dark, curly hair, neither of whom were family, both of whom were his parents' age. They actually came over and introduced themselves. Tony and Jessica, calling them by their first names was fine. Friends of Tom's mother. They'd been hoping to get together for a while now, looking forward to meeting their friend's son, but, well, obviously that wasn't going to happen.
(Tony mentioned that he has a son and a daughter about Tom's age, and they should arrange a play date some time.)
(Jessica was a lot quieter, and looked kind of a little bit ill, a little bit gaunt. She'd just lost her good friend, though, so maybe that's why.)
The actual funeral was the next day. It was a nice service at the local church, followed by a procession to the graveyard. Tom was allowed to sit next to his mom's casket on the way, but not to help carry it to the actual grave site (obviously, he was five). The sky was cloudy and gloomy, but not rainy.
He didn't break down and cry while clinging to his dad until after the service was over and his mother's coffin had been lowered into the ground.
What He Learns
☼ Character introductions: Tony, Jessica
☼ His mom's good friends
☼ Anyone who saw The Dragon might note that Jessica sounds mysteriously similar to the not-voice from that one. You know. If the not-voice had a voice.
☼ Some general extended family information, mostly that his dad's side is bigger than his mom's
☼ Dragon's Helm (an earlier part of the same series as Dragon's Blade)
☼ That uncle is probably the one who gave him Dragon's Blade, too
☼ More subtle hints that Nina had some specialness to her (hints which will go over Sol's head still unless it's pointed out)
☼ How funerals work
Notes
Both Tony and Jessica have been brought up before, actually. But there's no real connection yet, so. (...You can probably guess who.)
