Memory 29

Positive Trivial: Magical Paintball Gunnerman
Won: Day 150-151
Game: for once I have a character who isn't confused by horses on fire

Summary
It's the middle of the night in the forest in the spirits' world, and it's Tan's turn for lookout duty. ...Which basically consists of him staring at the campfire for a while, but. He is paying attention otherwise, really he is.

He does, however, lose track of time a little, so that it doesn't seem like as long as it should before Kim wakes up and comes over to take her shift, and tells him to go sleep. He decides against it, though, claiming he's not all that tired. Not that Kim's going to push the issue.

So they get to chatting to pass the time, and Kim asks how Tan's been doing ever since the group all got back together. Tan says he's been doing fine, but after some hesitation comments that it's felt kind of awkward. After what he did, everyone's just going to accept him back into the group just like that?

Kim notes that John was pretty negative about the whole thing at first, but she swatted him into submission soon enough, because the only ones who should be upset are the ones who were hurt, so he might want to talk to Norbert and Rena if he's worried about what they think. It's hard to get on Jennie's bad side, and Laura... "Sometimes I wonder if Nee-chan can feel that strongly anymore." And as for Kim?

Well, being the resident otaku, Kim's seen plenty of anime, and brainwashing and possession are of course a common plot point. And what would a good story be if that happened to the hero's best friend and they didn't reconcile after it was over and become better friends than ever?

(Tan notes dryly that this isn't an anime. Kim tilts her head and comments, "...Yeah, you're right. If it was, the Null would have name that wasn't dumb.")

He's still unsure, so Kim asks if he's ever heard of Magical Paintball Gunnerman. He answers no, and makes the mistake of asking what it is (though she probably would have continued anyway), leading her to get excitedly up in his face to tell him it's only the greatest anime she's ever seen!

She starts by explaining the premise, which is basically that in a world where Paintball is Serious Business, there were ancient heroes (the Gunnermen, or as they put it, Gunnermans, because Engrish) who fought a great evil using magical paintball weapons, and their souls were sealed away in them as part of the final gambit to seal the evil away for good, but now 3000 years in the future the magical gear has fallen into the hands of a bunch of paintball players, and the evil is trying to break the seal and cover the world again, so they have to partner with the souls of the heroes to stop it. While playing paintball. She also gives a brief synopsis of the main characters and their magic gear and stuff. (Or, well, she thinks it's brief. It actually starts to get kind of rambly to the point where Tan almost starts to tune it out, but she pokes him hard to make sure he's still listening.)

But the point of her bringing this up is episodes 65-67, where the protagonist Yuuji (he's got a magic helmet) has to face off against his best friend Tatsuya (no magic gear but he's a badass normal) who's been brainwashed by the eeeeevil American Merrick (who himself is brainwashed to use his magic paintball gun to work for evil but that's apparently a whole other complicated bucket of stuff). And it's no small amount of havoc he wreaks while brainwashed. But even after their epic battle over a pit of acid (see: serious business), when Yuuji snaps Tatsuya out of it, their friendship is stronger than ever.

(Kim's imagine spot has lots of shoujo tears and hugging and shipping potential. This may or may not be how it actually goes in-series.)

And she's sure that he, Norbert, and Rena's friendship will turn out just as strong if not even stronger. When he expresses some doubt, she twists his ear painfully and tells him to stop being such a worrier about it, and then tells him that after everything's over, he's coming over to her and Laura's place and they're going to marathon the entirety of Magical Paintball Gunnerman so he can get it through his head. That's not optional.

With a sigh, knowing that she's not going to let it go, he agrees.

What He Learns
☼ Kim continues to be weird. Well-intentioned, but weird.
☼ ...well most everyone seems okay with his continued existence in the group...?
☼ and Kim seems to think everything will be okay, so...?
☼ more than he ever wanted to know about Magical Paintball Gunnerman
☼ whyyyyyyy

Notes
It's probably obvious that Magical Paintball Gunnerman is a (very) thinly-veiled expy of Yu-Gi-Oh. Other important characters include (but are not limited to) Steve, who has a magic pellet container that never runs out, and Diana, who has magic chest armor.
