Memory 31
Significant Positive: reunion
Won: Day 160
Game: failing at ship charts
Summary
Tan, Fiere, and Ambre are walking through a hilly field covered in grass and large rocks. There's the impression that they don't really have a particular destination in mind...? But they're not just walking for the sake of walking, either? There's not much context for why they're over here, in this memory.
But that doesn't really matter, because they soon hear the sound of battle nearby.
Immediately, Tan takes off in the direction the battle's sound is coming from, climbing to the top of a particularly rocky hill in the process, the foxes following behind, because of course none of them are going to just let this be, if there's fighting going on here then there's probably Null involved.
Which there is. Giant, lumbering beasts of inky blackness, their backsides barely able to support themselves much less move quickly, not that they have to when their front claws are three-quarters the size of their torso and glazed with a sheen that looks like sharpened obsidian. They have no eyes... well, no, that's wrong, they do, but they're as black as the rest of them, so it's hard to tell they're there. They do have mouths, though, giant grins with teeth that almost seem to drip downward.
Two figures oppose them, both of them tiny in comparison but both quite capable of standing up to the creatures of Null. A black-haired young man clad in a regal yet gentle purple, a pair of rabbit ears atop his head and a feather-styled guitar in his hands, the strings creating sonic blasts to chip away at the beasts. A blonde young woman in an emerald green sparkling along the hems, her long hair entwined around the wings of butterflies and antennae crowning her temple, wielding a white rose-tipped bow and arrows against her foes. Both of them flying on feathered angel wings, their heads cloaked in radiant (but still gentle on the eyes) halos.
Tan stops in his tracks for a moment in shock, because much as she'd told him, it's one thing to be told and another still to see, and yet still, it's hard to believe, he's desperately hoped, but part of him hadn't been able to believe, but there they are...
There Norbert and Rena are, fighting their hardest against the Null. And holding their own, but they're outnumbered.
"Tan?"
He glances down to see Fiere looking up at him, quietly just waiting for his decision about what to do. And for the briefest of moments, he hesitates, because surely they can't forgive him, surely they don't think of him as their friend anymore even if they are still alive...
But that doesn't matter, because he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he let them die here without trying to help anyway. They're alive, he's not about to let that change.
"You ready to go?"
Fiere nods, and Ambre, understanding, tells them both to be careful.
They then run forward and jump off the hill, yelling that same (blurred) thing, merging into their own angelic form, and taking flight toward the battle. And they make it just as Norbert, too focused on dodging the Null in front of him, notices just a second too late that he's being ambushed by a Null behind him as well.
Tan slashes it in half with his fire sword.
"...Tan?? Is that you?"
"Talk later!"
With Tan entering the fight, the three of them easily overpower the Null's forces - he might lack practice with this form, but he's always been the top in raw power - with only patches of dead grass to show that there was ever a foe there to begin with.
Tan lands on the ground facing away from the other two, and he and Fiere untransform, the latter materializing in his arms. From the energy in the air, he can somehow tell that the other two do the same even without looking, and he tries to compose himself even as they call his name. They don't come closer, but they don't sound like their voices have hatred - maybe they're just as unsure and nervous as he is...?
Deep breath in, deep breath out, smile on his face, and he turns around.
"Hi guys. Long time no see."
Norbert with a rabbit in his arms. Rena with a butterfly sitting in her hair. Both of their expressions just kind of light up, and they run toward him, shouting his name before both embracing him. (The spirits notice this and leap (or flutter) off their respective human before they can get squished, naturally.)
"You're okay!"
"You dummy! Don't ever do that again, okay?"
"We were really worried!"
He's a little overwhelmed, honestly. And it takes him a minute to even be able to say anything more, as he tries to hold his composure together. When he finally manages a word, it's "How...?", to which they just respond that Jennie is a miracle worker.
But they just hold him, and they were so worried about him, and neither of them seems angry at him in the least even though he could have killed them, he nearly killed them, they'd have every right to hate him but they don't...
He finally can't take it any longer, he loses his composure, and he just hugs them back and breaks down crying, blubbering apologies over and over. But they don't push him away, they just keep holding him - one of them, probably Rena, starts petting his back a little to help him relax - and Norbert just tells him that he's just glad he's okay, fighting his own head as much as he did must have been really hard.
And of course they forgive him. That's what friends are for, right?
What He Learns
☼ traveling with Ambre
☼ confirmation that Norbert and Rena are Angels too
☼ which means that at this point he'd be more surprised if the others aren't
☼ doesn't really tell him much more about what it means to be an Angel, but
☼ and he knew Norbert and Rena were alive from previous memories
☼ but there's something about the first time he saw them after that
☼ /sob they're okay and they don't hate him even though he nearly killed them and
☼ and
☼ ...
☼ ;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~;
Notes
A thing Tan will never learn: Rena did actually die for a brief moment, when Tan exploded his soul. But her plant powers passively regrew enough of her that she was able to revive herself to barely hang on until Jennie could heal her. Norbert is the only one she's told, and neither of them will tell another soul, especially not Tan, so.
(Norbert did not die, because Rena had knocked him down to shield him from the flames, but he came within a hair's breadth of it.)
