Memory 12
Neutral Significant: the formation of the Night Phoenix Gang
Won: Day 94
Game: travesty board game
Summary
This memory is of the afternoon after the Playground Brawl. Tan is 12, and he and Norbert are sitting outside the principal's office. Tan is pouting.
One by one, the parents of each of the kids who attacked Laura show up, and they and their kid go into the principal's office. He doesn't overhear exactly what goes on, but a lot of them end in shouting matches with the parents insisting "well my child would never do that you have the wrong one!" or the like. And then they exit, and the kid doesn't seem like they're going to be punished at all.
In fact, the only one who does come out worse for wear is Rena's brother, whose mother pulls him by the ear as they walk out, scolding him and telling him that it's off to military school for him, she didn't raise a boy who would do something as terrible as that, how dare he??? Rena goes home with her family - not being part of the actual fight, she doesn't have to stay, and school is dismissed for the day while everything gets settled, so.
Eventually, Tan and Norbert get called in to the principal's office, where they have a chat with the principal himself. He halfheartedly commends them for saving the lives of two young girls and a teacher's aide, but stresses that violence is not the answer to one's problems and that ordinarily it would not be tolerated even in defense. Tan mutters, irritated, that the violence from the kids who attacked first seems to be being tolerated, but the principal insists that Ms. Biggs will be taking it upon herself to punish her entire class. Not that Tan believes it, and he gets into a bit of a shouting match with the principal, who makes a show of authority and claims that he's doing them a favor and that the only reason the both of them aren't suspended for their violent behavior is because the music department would have his head if he took Norbert away from them, and he can't rightly suspend one but not the other. Tan almost pulls out his fists, but Norbert thankfully stops him before he can.
After their meeting with the principal and while they're waiting for their parents, Tan complains to Norbert that the adults are useless. They claim to care about the kids, but they don't do anything to protect them and punish them when they try to do a good deed. Norbert agrees, but thinks there's not much the two of them can do about it.
And that's when Tan has an idea. If they adults aren't going to be useful, the kids'll just have to look out for each other. They'll form a gang, one that'll bring all the kids in town together to protect each other and look out for each other, but only the good kids, no bad kids allowed. That way, something like this won't happen again, because there'll be someone out there who'll actually do something about it. And they can call it the Night Phoenix Gang, because even in the dark of night, they'll blaze like a phoenix and strike down evil!
...Norbert thinks that's one of Tan's lamer ideas, but the intent behind it is good, so he agrees to be the co-leader of this gang. And they can start by recruiting their friends, and then their friends' friends, and they can meet in the park after school and stuff.
Norbert's parents show up around this point, and the two of them agree to actually start hashing things out tomorrow afternoon. It's another half an hour-ish until Tan's father shows up to pick him up, and he passes the time by doodling in a notebook, ideas for a logo for their new gang.
On the drive home, Tan's father asks what happened, and Tan gives his side of the story, not mentioning the whole wanting to create a gang thing but otherwise being as thorough as he can and most certainly not hiding his anger at both the bullies and the adults who he has deemed useless. His father, after listening, sighs and shakes his head, but comments that while what he did was reckless, his mother would be proud.
What He Learns
☼ Adults are USELESS. >_< (Note: Rats don't count as adults, not even the adult Rats.)
☼ Worse than useless! They would have been suspended if the principal wasn't doing them a 'favor', but the actual attackers got away with nothing?
☼ (And don't think for a second he actually believes that Ms. Biggs actually punished them. Not because he actively knows better, but because he's pissed at the principal.)
☼ Rena's brother was sent to military school as punishment though. So at least the Murrays are decent people.
☼ Norbert is something of a prodigy and a favorite when it comes to music.
☼ The music department has a surprising amount of influence in the Watergate School District.
☼ Obviously, the best thing to do when adults are useless is to make a gang! Kids looking out for themselves so as to not have to rely on the useless adults.
☼ The Night Phoenix Gang! Surely nothing can go wrong with this.
☼ Norbert thought it was dumb but went along with it anyway.
☼ He actually gets to remember his dad's face now!
☼ His mom would be proud of him for defending the girls.
Notes
Yes, your pyro gogglehead-expy derp is the co-leader and creator of a gang. ...Spoilers, it's a very romanticized gang, to the point where really "glorified afterschool program" would be more accurate, but.
