Summary
(This memory starts still feeling as though something is broken and empty in Tan's soul.)
With that, Tan--
--simply says "No."
When the Dragon questions, Tan slowly brings the sword down to his side, rather than above his head, and repeats himself. He won't do it. Even if this fox is the one behind that... killing him won't make things right. It won't bring the dead back. It won't do anything. Not even make him feel better, because it's just more death. Revenge is pointless and stupid, and he's not one to do it.
(The negative feelings are coming back, the clarity is fading, but he's ready this time, he knows it's coming, he can redirect the pain how he wants rather than being overwhelmed...)
...And then he points the sword at the Dragon with a glare, saying that any part of his soul would know that.
With a humph, the Dragon dismisses the sword into black smoke and decides that if Tan won't do it, he'll just do it himself. He breathes fire at the fox...
...but a sudden windstorm dissipates the flames, from an apparition of John whose expression is something of a proud smirk. "Guess you've got some backbone after all. Maybe my sister was right, maybe we can trust you."
(One of the crystals on his bracelet turns something of a yellow-orange. ...Hey, when did that strand turn something of an icy blue...?)
Furious, the Dragon lashes his tail at the ground, causing the earth to heave a bit and knocking Tan and the fox away from each other. Tan pushes himself to his feet as soon as he can, though the fox is a distance away and obviously doesn't look like he's in a good state. He barely has the energy to breathe, let alone run away.
And the Dragon has his claw poised and ready, aiming to strike the fox.
He has to protect him. No questions, no reasons, he just knows has to protect the fox at all costs. So he runs to try and do a diving save, and even though he almost doesn't make it...
...well, suddenly the Dragon roars as a cloud of pollen blinds him. Tan almost pauses when he sees Rena's apparition, but she points toward the fox to encourage him forward. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? So keep going!"
(The last crystal turns green.)
So Tan just barely manages to dive in the way as the Dragon, unable to see where he's striking, brings his claw down. The pain of the claw races through his back, and he can't help but let out a scream...
but then the world suddenly bursts into color, and Fiere feels renewed, and everything rushes back, everything rushes back, the fox is Fiere, his precious partner, this human is Tan, his important friend, and (though the memories are blurred here) he remembers all the good times they'd had, how could he have ever forgotten, and more importantly that's broken, it's finally broken
The Dragon howls with rage. "No! The Flame is supposed to be mine!"
But Fiere shakes himself off and tells the Dragon that the contract is broken, so he has no hold on either of them anymore. He then runs and attacks the Dragon while Tan sits, a little dumbfounded with everything just hitting at once, with finally understanding - the Dragon was the other presence, this is all the Dragon's doing, and the Dragon is a creature of Null - and yet not understanding anything.
His instinct brings him to his feet, though, and to the smouldering brazier. It should be lit properly, shouldn't it? Even if his own fire won't come... But the instant he touches it, it bursts into a roaring blaze, and he can feel it, his own fire at his call.
And he sees the apparitions of his friends again, gathered around the brazier. (He sees the six of them, but he can feel there are more...? Perhaps behind him?) The six visible ones give words of encouragement (well, not Laura, she just gives an encouraging smile), and one last mystery not-voice tells him "I'm glad you've grown to have such a strong heart."
The last strand of his bracelet turns scarlet, and he suddenly knows what to do. He calls out to Fiere, who understands his intentions immediately, and they both say (something blurred in this memory)...
...and then, oneBiomerge Digivolution Magical Shounen Transformation Fusion Dance Sequence later (involving them both setting themselves on fire, naturally), Tan and Fiere become one. Their soul feels whole for the first time since before it was broken.
Not only that, but... well, here's the thing, Tan's never seen himself in a mirror in this form, so he doesn't actually remember what he looks like here. But he knows certain things. He knows he's wearing scarlet chainmail that provides plenty of protection but is surprisingly light. He knows his ears are no longer those of a human but those of a fox, and that he has a swishable fox's tail somewhere back there. And perhaps more importantly, he knows he's got three pairs of wings, one large, two small.
He's an Angel.
And he exists to get rid of Null like this Dragon.
Using the bracelet as a focus, he creates a sword made of fire and takes to the air to face the Dragon, who seems... actually frightened by this turn of events. It tries to use Tan's words against him - "And here you said you don't take revenge."
Tan's response is simple. "This isn't revenge. This is making sure this never happens again."
And then he flies in and stabs the dragon in the forehead, causing it to roar with pain.
What He Learns
☼ More Broken Soul arc
☼ Revenge is dumb.
☼ He didn't actually go through with hurting Fiere! \o/
☼ The Dragon tried, but John and Rena's apparitions stopped him.
☼ ...aaaand some kind of contract broke when the Dragon injured him?
☼ (Is this related to the Null at the Cliff not hurting him...?)
☼ He forgot Fiere???
☼ And pretty much nobody's surprised that the Dragon is evil.
☼ Also I suppose I should note Yet Another Mystery Not-Voice
☼ ...wait
☼ holy crap
☼ holy is the right word for this, yes
☼ he's an ANGEL??????
