Memory 30

Trivial Positive: high school chemistry
Won: Day 156
Game: Fade's heart

Summary
It's the day after coming back from winter break in Tan's freshman year of high school (he's 14). Specifically, it's time for chemistry with Mr. Clovis, a class he wishes he had with Norbert and Rena, but he only has a couple classes with each of them, which stinks, but at least they still have afternoon Night Phoenix meetings.

Besides, it's the best class of the day regardless, especially on lab days like today. And especially this particular lab day. Because they just got back from winter break, so the teacher wants to ease them back into things with something easy and fun, they're doing a special experiment. Working individually, each student gets a bunsen burner and five different powders, and they're supposed to burn them and record what happens.

Tan is thrilled by this, for (in hindsight) obvious reasons - the lack of need for a formal report is only the icing on the cake - and dives into the experiment, burning the first sample and being amazed by the green color the flame turns. The others turn just as impressive shades - blue, yellow, bright red, even purple.

When he's done (far too quickly for his liking, far faster than the rest of the class, how can they be so slow at this??? it's fire and amazing) and has recorded everything and still has plenty of time in the class, he goes up to the teacher and asks if there's anything else he can burn to make cool things happen - he means, for extra credit, obviously. Because of course he does.

Mr. Clovis (who has seen enough of this kid in the past half a year to realize that he's got a probably mostly harmless fascination with fire and is more amused by him than anything) humors him, and pulls out a small container of iron filings, telling Tan that he trusts he'll be careful with it.

And so Tan spends the rest of the class period setting iron filings on fire and fascinatedly watching the sparks that are generated from this.

What He Learns
☼ Minor character introduction: Mr. Clovis, the chemistry teacher
☼ What is this, an actual school memory???
☼ How high school chemistry works
☼ as well as in general how high school classes work
☼ Chemistry happens to be the one class he can say he really really likes
☼ ...mostly because sometimes things get set on fire
☼ LOOK AT THOSE COLORS *-*
☼ eternal pyro
☼ (...maybe he should quest for some of these chemical powders some time...?)

Notes
for reference

Also the chemistry teacher's full name is Nathanial Clovis. (Spot the pun.)
