Memory 3
Negative Trivial: Lonely Night at Home
Won: Day 70
Game: Zelos' Heart
Summary
This memory takes place on the evening of Tan's tenth birthday. It starts with him entering his house and waving goodbye to Norbert and Rena and their parents, thanking them for the fun day he had with them. He then closes the door, locks it, and calls out to his father, saying that he's home.
No one answers.
This isn't too surprising, however, and he immediately beelines to the kitchen, where, as expected, a note is left on the fridge.
Tom -
I know I promised I'd be home early tonight, but we got an important client at work, so I might not make it home in time for dinner. I'm sorry.
I left you hot dogs in the fridge, and there's ice cream cake in the freezer for after. Be careful with the knife.
Happy Birthday.
-Dad
Tan pulls off the note, reads it, and then crumples it, trying to suppress his sadness because he knows his dad is just doing what he needs to for both of them but it's his birthday he should keep his promise.
So he ends up nuking the hot dogs in the microwave for dinner like he's done a thousand times and eating them quietly, not feeling hungry enough for cake after. Instead, he goes to the living room and reads his cards again - a pair of them from Norbert and Rena, which are Hallmark-y things that their parents picked out but they're signed "Happy Birthday, Tan!" and make him feel marginally better because they hung out with him all day at least.
He also spends a minute or two looking at a picture of his mom and telling the photo all about the day he had with his friends (though this is kind of blurred in this memory). He wonders if she were here if he would at least be able to hang out with her right now.
He then spends about an hour playing a new video game a relative gave him, a cool RPG where you play as a heroic swordsman and fight evil, but keeps looking at the door, hoping his father will come home.
It's about 10:30 PM when he finally falls asleep on the couch, exhausted from staying up way past his usual bedtime. His father doesn't end up coming home until 1.
What He Learns
☼ His name is Tan!
☼ ...Well, Norbert and Rena call him Tan. His father calls him Tom. Both of them are accurate - Tom is his birth name, Tan is his favored nickname with his friends.
☼ Character introductions: Brendan (his father, no face or name given), Nina (his mother, no name given)
☼ His father has an important business job that often keeps him late.
☼ His mother is dead and has been for a while, but she's still important to him, so he probably knew her at some point.
☼ He's an only child, incidentally.
☼ some knowledge of the video game Dragon's Blade (an expy of Dragon Quest)
☼ +10 dislike of being alone
☼ His father sure did break his promise and miss his birthday :(
☼ Oh, I suppose it also includes the date of Tan's birthday, June 9.
Notes
Brendan Moore will never win Father of the Year. But he tries.
Also yay, I don't have to use brackets around Tan's name anymore~
