Memory 9

True Neutral: broken wanderings
Won: Day 83
Game: fluff bingo

Summary
This memory starts out feeling as though something is... off, with Tan as he is in it. Like he's somehow not whole, there's a huge emptiness that's wrong. It's almost like the feeling that he hadn't known he'd had before he got Fiere's shard back, except a thousand times worse, and a lot more noticeable.

When Tan finally notices, he's walking forward through a thick light-gray fog, nothing but fog to be seen in any direction. His consciousness is just as foggy - he can barely think, he has no idea where he's going or why, he has no idea what he's even been doing recently - and he just idly thinks to himself, he could really use some kind of clue right now. Directions, or heck, even to know where he is in the first place.

As though in answer, he suddenly sees a light in the fog, and he goes toward it, only to find Laura standing there holding a steel lantern. Tan tries to ask her what she's doing here, but finds his voice won't come - Laura, however, just smiles and hands him the lantern and a note that says "Everyone needs a little help sometimes."

Tan then hears a male voice that he doesn't recognize, which says "You'll know the truth when you see it. Listen to your doubts." When he looks around to try and find the source of the voice, however, he sees nobody... and in fact, Laura has vanished by the time he looks back in her direction.

Still, the lantern remains, and it pierces through the fog, allowing him to see that he's in a forest, albeit one drained of color. It's not much, but he presses on through the forest, because maybe this way he'll actually be able to see where he's going. Eventually, though, he hears something, he's not sure what. Right afterward, however, he feels a hand on his shoulder, and he turns to see Norbert, who asks if he heard that too, comments that something out there is in pain, and tells him to follow him. Tan does so, and finding his voice, asks what Norbert is doing there, but Norbert just grins and says "Helping my best friend, what else?"

Tan soon comes across the source of the sound, at which point Norbert disappears when he's not looking just like Laura did, and he finds a fox on the ground, its fur matted and covered with unnatural grey stuff that's almost kind of like a physical aura, breathing heavily and just not doing too well in general. Tan immediately feels... something, but it's muted somehow, to the point where he can't tell what it is he's feeling at all. He's spared from having to figure it out eventually, however, by Jennie running up to him and saying worriedly that the fox looks gravely ill. She then pulls out a bowl and uses her power to fill it with water, saying that he should get the fox to drink some, that'll help it. (Because her water has healing properties, you see.) When Tan wonders what she's doing here too, she just says "You know I can't stand to see anyone in pain. You're the same way, right?"

Starting to wonder where everyone is coming from and then vanishing to, but deciding that that can wait until the fox is doing better, he tries to get it to drink but it's too sick to lean up at all, so he starts by attempting to wash its fur. He manages to get some of the grey stuff off, uncovering red fur, and eventually that helps the fox to get enough energy to drink. While doing this, Tan notices something on his wrist that he doesn't remember being there before: a charm bracelet, with six charms and three strands. One strand is yellow, and three of the charms are silver (with some gold), purple, and blue, but the rest it's impossible to tell colors, somehow.

Once the fox has finished the water, Tan gets up to keep moving, and the fox decides to follow him - Tan doesn't see any reason to stop it from doing so. Eventually, their wanderings find a lake in the middle of the forest, its color also drained, but in the middle of this lake is an island, and on that island is a mountain, and the top of the mountain almost seems to be calling to Tan. The problem, of course, is that Tan can't swim.

Almost right on cue, Kim shows up and offers him and his "kawaii fox friend" a ride across the water, saying "You've helped me and Nee-chan out enough, I might as well return the favor~ Ne, Charcoal Boy?" She then creates a giant turtle golem, big enough for both of them, and they ride it across the water. Along the way, Tan notices that another charm on his bracelet is suddenly a shiny bronze.

This memory then cuts out as Tan and the fox are starting to climb the mountain.

What He Learns
☼ Why does he feel so broken in this memory?
☼ ...Mysterious voice. Is this what he was talking about with Laura in the ice cave?
☼ For the record, that fox is, in fact, Fiere. How did Fiere get that sick, and how was their connection that messed with?
☼ Guys I found our healer!
☼ This is where he first had the charm bracelet, then. And presumably where it helped him? Seeing as something is going on with it...
☼ Also his charm bracelet has seven charms, not six. Did something happen there?
☼ ...okay seriously what is up with that "Charcoal Boy" thing...?
☼ What is on top of the mountain?

Notes
Whee, this is his first memory to actually feature his bracelet since his starter~ (...mostly because I've been avoiding those because there's a certain thing he has to learn a certain way but) Also it unlocks his worst memory, but I won't be prioritizing it for a bit I think.

Tan's soul stuff is messed up, I'm sorry.
