Summary
Tan is following Kim and Laura through a not-very-well-traveled path through the woods, constantly having to push branches and the like out of his way. He asks why they have to go this way and they can't just go home to get food, and Kim says that the two of them have had plans to stick around "here" for a while this time, they're not going home this time until they have answers. And she won't tell Tan how to get home, either, because she knows he won't come back if she does. But don't worry, because three days "here" seems to only last one back home, so it's not like they'll miss you anyway! or so she says.
Eventually, they do come across something - a clearing, where a bunch of market stalls have been set up. Little glowing lights flit around the place, and a lot of beings go about their business, buying and selling various things. "Beings", because none of them are human - some of them have a vaguely human-like shape, like a few fairies and the like, but all of them have at least some kind of animal characteristic, if they aren't fully animal in the first place.
Tan makes to get a closer look, but Kim stops him, because they can't just go in there! They have to blend in. Apparently she and Laura have tried this before and looking human just caused a mass panic. "Here" is a world of spirits, after all. Not humans.
So instead, Kim uses her powers to give everybody animal ears! She gives herself cat ears again, Laura some cute bunny ears, and Tan gets antlers. Why antlers? Because they're the first thing Kim thought fit. When he doesn't look pleased, she insultedly asks if he has a better idea, which... well, he doesn't, so.
So they head into market, and the first thing they do is sell a couple of metal trinkets - just a couple of mini statuettes that Laura made by pulling metal up from the ground, but it fetches a nice sum of gold coins. They then split the earnings in three and split up to buy enough food to hopefully last a week.
Tan wanders through the stalls and picks up a few things - he's more drawn to the sweets than anything, but he does try to keep a balance. While looking over some sweet bread, though, he overhears a couple of spirits gossiping. Apparently, they have an acquaintance who guards something called a footprint, and the recent Null attacks have been coming from there, so what is that acquaintance doing? They know the dangers, after all. They shouldn't be letting any through.
What really gets him to pay attention, though, is when they mention a name: Bobby Olin. Tan immediately recognizes it - he's a kid in the Night Phoenix Gang, about two years younger than him, always kind of stressed about his homework but a good kid. And if he's involved in something about the Null, then he's probably in trouble, and like hell if he's going to just let that happen.
So he barges in on their conversation and asks where this is. The gossipers are kind of taken aback, but they do give directions to where the footprint is at least.
When shopping is done, Tan tells Kim and Laura about what he learned and insists that they have to go help. Kim gets a little annoyed because he drew so much attention to himself, but Laura agrees that they should try to help, and Kim defers to her big sister.
What He Learns
☼ There's a human world and a spirit world, or at least he'll call them that for now
☼ Is Fiere from the spirit world then? That'd make some sense.
☼ Time difference: three days in the spirit world = one day in the human world
☼ Why antlers...?
☼ ...actually, you'd think he'd have suggested fox ears...
☼ The spirit world has a gold-based economy
☼ Something something footprint, something something spirit guarding it to keep Null from getting into the spirit world, something something connected to a human
☼ Need to help Bobby!
Notes
Trivia: Bobby Olin used to be the resident Ice elemental. Then I cut him out because he wasn't doing anything, but then I put Ice back in at another point and made a different character. So now Bobby's a relatively minor side character.
