Summary
This takes place in mid-autumn when Tan is 14 (so a little over half a year prior to present day). It starts with a fairly typical meeting of the Night Phoenix Gang, and Tan has just finished a session of practicing some sword technique (this is still fairly early in his learning process) with a kid named Bobby.
When they finish up, Rena (who's wearing her hair under that hat) calls Tan over because she wants to talk with him and Norbert. It turns out this is going to be the last day she can hang out with them after school, because her mom is getting concerned about the whole gang thing and wants her to come home immediately after school every day. The boys are confused, because it's not like they make trouble, and nobody's had a problem with them before, but apparently there have been reports of actual negative gang activity in the area, and Rena's mom doesn't want to take any chances that her daughter will turn out like her son (who's still in military school).
Tan doesn't get the chance to complain that this isn't fair, though, because one of the little kids in the gang (a cute first grader who goes by Maddy) runs up to them crying because she was just trying to come here but she ran into this boy who was using spray paint on the side of a building and when she told him that he shouldn't be doing that 'cause it's wrong he said she was just a weak little girl who should just run along and then when she told him that she was a member of the Night Phoenixes he threatened to hit her and said to tell the Night Phoenixes to get out of town 'cause he's a Crab and this is their turf now or something and he was really scary.
Rena comforts the poor kid, while Tan decides that he's not going to stand for this. The Night Phoenixes were started to stop bullies like that, and darn it, they're going to do their job! And so that evening, on the way home, he, Norbert, and a few other older kids go by where Maddy said the bully was, to see if they can't find out where he went and talk to him. After a little bit of searching, they find a few teenage boys in a back alley, smoking. When Tan asks if they know anything about the Crabs, they laugh and ask if he's one of those weakling Night Phoenixes that little girl mentioned. Tan glares at them and demands that they not bother them again, but the Crabs pull out knives and attack, saying that this is their turf.
This leads to a fight that lasts a few minutes. The Night Phoenixes are unarmed and up against blades, so the others get somewhat injured, but Norbert is surprisingly light on his feet and dodges nearly all of the blows (but then, he's usually a defensive sparrer), and Tan doesn't really care even when he gets nicked a few times, so eventually between the two of them they manage to take the Crabs down.
One of them throws a smoke bomb and yells for the others to get away and that they won't forget this, but Tan runs through it (it doesn't bother him one bit) and grabs the kid by the collar, and tells him that the Crabs had better not come back to Watergate. This is their town, and they don't tolerate bullies.
A few days later, the Night Phoenixes are cleaning the graffiti off the side of the building, much to the gratitude of the owner. Rena even makes it to help out, and says that her mom finally loosened up after she heard from Maddy's mother and some of the local business owners how great it is to have the Night Phoenixes in town. Plus the Crabs haven't been seen since that night, so there's that too.
Norbert comments that he guesses Tan scared the guy enough, and Tan says it was no big deal, but deep down, he's happy and proud that he managed this.
What He Learns
☼ Here we get Bobby's face
☼ some more about the Night Phoenix Gang and its members
☼ Bobby taught him how to sword fight, apparently
☼ The Night Phoenixes are liked around town
☼ Other gangs aren't as good as the Night Phoenixes
☼ but that's okay we can take 'em!
☼ Bullies are still bad
Notes
The Night Phoenixes continue to be highly idealized to the point of being a glorified after school program. But Tan wouldn't have it any other way.
